Quality Engineer

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Quality Engineer is responsible for performing quality assurance and control functions in support of the assigned business unit within the Kopin Virgina (KV), inc. operation.  The position coordinates and works closely with the Production, Engineering and Product Development organizations. The Quality Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and deploying approved quality support, operational processes and best practices consistently throughout their assigned area of responsibility with a focus on customer satisfaction, yield improvements, reducing costs, on-time delivery and process efficiency optimization.  

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (All inclusive or a portion shall apply according to the assigned scope of responsibility and business unit.)

  • Takes ownership of companies Quality Management System: ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016
  • Prepares and conducts quarterly management reviews
  • Conducts internal quarterly audits
  • Performs and supports production inspection steps, including Incoming Quality Control, Outgoing Quality Control, etc.
  • Establishes, mentors, and enforces a culture of quality throughout the Kopin Virginia organization.
  • Initiates corrective action processes resulting from customer complaints, identified non- conformances.  As needed, conducts and helps with Failure Analysis.
  • Leads investigations to determine root causes including issues of customer complaints.
  • Ensures resolution of corrective actions is accomplished in a timely manner using sound 
    methods for root cause analysis, short term containment, and permanent solutions.
  • Communicates the status, results, and impacts of corrective actions to the appropriate stakeholders. 
  • Inspects and audits to ensure products and processes conform to workmanship standards, documented procedures, and expected quality levels.
  • Develops and assists in developing new processes for production. 
  • Oversees and assists in the development of quality control plans, as required by internal and/or external customer and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure measurement systems and gage calibrations are compliant with established policies and requirements as detailed in QMS, customer requirements, and/or control plans.
  • Analyzes and reviews RMA activities to assist in claim resolution and evaluate trends for continuous improvement and opportunities.
  • Develop monitors and publishes quality metrics that will accurately represent the performance levels of the business, internal operations, and supply chain.
  • Drives continuous improvement efforts to meet or exceed quality objectives.
  • Prepares and presents Quality Control Department information for monthly meetings.
  • Reviews and approves documentation and processes.
  • Supervises supplier activities to ensure conforming products are receiving and released to the production operation and conformance documents are properly stored in company’s ERP system.
  • Ensure proper lot-markings are in place on all parts received through IQC.
  • Determines and implements countermeasures to ensure no recurring defects.
  • Ensures delivery of quality projects that exceed customer requirements and expectations.
  • Ensure a safe and productive work environment for production and service is maintained at all times.
  • Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of Kopin management.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Kopin is a defense contractor and is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position.
  • Associate degree in Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • 5+ years of work experience in quality engineering in a relevant manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to lead and document Root Cause and Corrective Actions using typical Industry tools.
  • Knowledge of FMEA, SPC, FRACAS, etc.  Experience with maintaining an ISO 9001:2008 Quality System.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced company environment.
  • Strong experience with ISO 9001 systems.
  • Experience developing and executing DOEs.
  • Experience with SPC analyses.
  • Experience developing process flow charts, process maps, or swim lanes.
  • Technical Knowledge: Computer literate – Familiar with MS-Office programs, Outlook/e-mail.

PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS degree in Science, Math or Engineering related subjects.
  • Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certification.
  • Significant experience working with customers as a Quality Engineer or Program Manager.
  • Experience working in Class 100 Clean Room.
  • Experience leading APQP or FMEA analyses.
  • Previous Lead ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 auditor (external or internal) would be a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to rotate from sitting to standing, lift up to 20 pounds, and gown according to clean room protocol.
